Three kids, one iPad and a nine-hour flight. How will you cope?
There are many times that a headphone splitter will come in handy (the above example being one of them), so whether you need a way to share music and films with your family as you travel or for a group gaming session in your living room, the best headphone splitter will help you share sound without sacrificing sound quality.
If you’ve already dedicated the research into finding the right electronic devices, then put a little bit of extra thought into the small accessories that you’ll need to use it with. The wrong headphone splitter will have a negative impact on your listening experience, so we will highlight the right headphone splitters for you below!Things to Take into Consideration
@Pulse just got my ergo a couple of days ago. Finally got my headphones to work thx to the amazing video u posted here. I only one a small problem now. All the hardware knobs are mapped with the software besides the master on top and the headphone volume. When i move the knobs on the ergo it does turn the volume up but the know won’t visually turn on the virtual dj software skim. I have had the Virtual DJ 5 softwareon my computer for a while now and have only recently started using it. I’ve got a HP dv6000 entertainment laptop has three audio input/outputs on the front, there is: A mic in on the left A audio out in the middle which i use a cable to attach it to my hifi. A ’spdif’ on the right?? the middle and right ones are linked with a headphone image. I have Virtual DJ and I want to play one song through my speakers while listening to the next through my headphones but I only have one headphone output on my computer. When i put in a splitter it just plays the same music through both.
Think about what you need from a headphone splitter as you’re searching. Here are a few things for you to consider:
*Number of Ports. If you have multiple listeners, you need multiple ports. The standard is two, but you can find splitters with five or more ports.
The down side to a splitter with more than two ports is that you may be sacrificing some sound quality. The more listeners there are the less sound each one will hear, but really, the difference depends on the quality of the splitter. If the headphones you’re using don’t have individual volume control, each listener may not have the same experience.
Luckily, some manufacturers have taken steps to prevent the sound loss, such as the Belkin Rockstar. We’ll discuss it more below, so keep reading!
*Gold-Plated vs. Silver-Plated and Nickel-Plated Plugs. Gold is a better conductor of electricity than silver and nickel, but unless you have a really high-quality device, you won’t notice the difference in sound between a gold-plated plug vs. silver or nickel-plated plug.
Either one of these plugs, for the sake of headphone splitters, is great.
*Secure Fit. One of the main things you should look at when comparing and contrasting splitters is the fit. You want it to be snug and secure, just like the PlugLugs on our list below (number two).Top 6 Headphone Splitters ChartPictureName# of PortsPriceRating (1-5)PictureName# of PortsPriceRating (1-5)1. The Belkin Rockstar is a traveling family’s best friend. Is a quiet, peaceful car ride or relaxing flight is possible? While we can’t guarantee the outcome of your travels, at least you know that you’ll give it your best shot by connecting everyone to a great movie!
The Rockstar features one hard-wired connection and five jacks that will allow listeners to enjoy music, films or favorite TV programs from any type of device: DVD players, smartphones, tablets, iPad, laptops and much more.
Rockstar is a very appropriate name for this splitter because…it pretty much rocks. Each listener will experience excellent sound quality, even if all five jacks are in use. Not very many splitters are capable of delivering this level of sound quality with more than two jacks, which is why we consider it the best headphone splitter on our list!2. PlugLug PL11073
Any device that fits a 3.5mm plug will work with this headphone splitter.
The sturdy design features plugs with strain relief design and beveled step-down design that will help keep your devices securely plugged in. They also feature polished metal molding and corrosion-resistant gold-plated plugs, giving it a slight edge over some of the other options out there that use nickel.
This is a Y-splitter with plugs for two devices. Connect it to MP3 players, CD players, laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.
For a high quality splitter with two plugs, you’ll love the PlugLug.3. iLuv i111
You have five listeners, one device. What to do?
Just have everyone plug into the iLuv splitter. It’s compatible with any standard 3.5mm plugs and allows you to connect to any iPad, iPod, iPhone or MP3 player, just what you need when you’re traveling and have multiple people listening to one device.
Some have found that when there is a lot of background noise (especially on an airplane) that it’s hard for multiple users to hear. Some also find that there isn’t a great range of volume if you have one person who likes the volume louder and others who like it softer, but in the workplace, at home or in places with normal noise levels, they work great!

Our reader’s letter today is from Gerald, who writes: “I have an Ion Discover DJ controller. I like it a lot. I used the tips I found about a DJ splitter cable (stereo – going out to two mono) but I am struggling with the software. I do not understand the routing nor how to set up the supplied MixVibes Cross LE software to allow me to use my splitter cables. I have a gig coming up and am trying to get all my gear set up. Can you help?”Digital DJ Tips says:
For those of you just starting out with very cheap DJ gear, or an iPad, iPhone or even Android DJ program, you may be having great fun with your DJ program or basic controller, but wondering how the hell you get your headphones and your speakers plugged in and working independently. This ability to “cue” (to listen “secretly” to the other music source, the one that’s not playing) is fundamental to DJing, and cheap laptop controllers and all iOS/Android software doesn’t have it built-in.
If you’ve dug a bit deeper, you may have found out – like Gerald – that a DJ splitter cable can be your saviour. This semi-legendary “hack” works by splitting the stereo signal into two independent mono signals, one for each of your required outputs. Sure, you’re now playing in mono – as you plug your speakers into one of these outputs, and your headphones into the other – but it’s a little-known fact that most “real” club sound systems are in mono anyway, and it’s a very small price to pay to be able to DJ with the gear in front of you in exactly the same way all DJs do.
Trouble is, getting any old splitter cable and plugging it in and hooking up your speakers and headphones isn’t enough. Firstly, you need a DJ splitter cable (the one we recommend is here). This genuinely puts the left channel to one pseudo-stereo output and the right to the other. Having the kind of splitter cable sold to share a single headphones output on an iPod, for instance, won’t work because it sends the same thing down each of its outputs.
Secondly, you need to tell your software that’s what you’re doing. You have to find the audio output, audio routing or audio configuration settings and look for “mono split”, “split mono” or “DJ splitter” setting – the one that shows all audio going through the single PC/iOS headphones output and also shows both the speakers and headphones plugging into this. In your case, Gerald, MixVibes has a page here that tells you exactly how to do it.Headphone With Mic Splitter
And don’t forget, you have to plug the speakers and headphones into the correct sockets on your cable! If things aren’t behaving how you feel they should (eg the “cue” buttons are turning the main audio on or off, or the crossfader is affecting your headphones) try swapping the headphones and speakers over at the cable.3 Way Headphone Splitter
One final thing that sometimes confuses people about all of this is a question that goes something like: “But I’ve got four decks and a sampler, don’t I need five outputs, not two?” The reason the answer to this is “no” is that even if you had 99 decks (and Virtual DJ 7 can, folks!), the mixer section of your software mixes all of these inputs into just two – one for your headphones,a dn one for the speakers – so however complex your software audio is, you only ever need two outputs – and if you can’t afford, or simply don’t currently have, a pro DJ audio interface (or a controller with one built in), an audio splitter cable is a great way to get going, or a sensible backup to have too. I’ve had one kicking around in my gig bag for 10 years.Headphone Splitter Best Buy
